Fine Minds/Tantalizing Topics

For a philosopher/musician/educator who is both (somewhat) environmentally disposed and utterly fascinated with the way that personal and community identity is negotiated in media, teaching a course in Environmental Communication is incredibly exciting.  Working with savvy and dedicated Unity College students to explore these issues makes this assignment something of a professional dream come true.

This blog will explore issues, observations, concepts, and developments associated with the emerging field of "Environmental Communication."  Robert Cox, in Environmental Communication and the Public Sphere (the textbook for this course) as dealing in these seven areas of related study:
  • Environmental rhetoric and discourse
  • Media and environmental journalism
  • Public participation in environmental decision making
  • Social marketing and advocacy campaigns
  • Environmental collaboration and conflict resolution
  • Risk communication
  • Representations of Nature in popular culture and green marketing
The Environmental Communication Network is a group of folks "concerned the role of communiciton in enviornmental affairs."

I can't wait to see what these fine young minds do with these tantalizing topics!
