"Make A Difference with Dawn"

The past couple of evenings as I have sat in front of the television to relax and nod off after a day of classes and homework, I have been seeing an interesting commercial flash across the screen. It shows people in green jump suits handling various species of wildlife such as penguins and an otter. Both of these animals are covered in a black, slick substance that can be very harmful to wildlife.

These animals have been caught in oil spills and need to be cleaned. I have seen the other advertisements for Dawn dishwashing liquid "the toughtest grease remover for your pots and pans". But for washing wildlife? I mean oil must be a little bit harder to remove than simple food grease right? Yeah, it probably is harder to remove, but Dawn claims their soap can do it.

Needing to satisfy my curiosity, I visited the Dawn website and read that conservationists at the International Bird Rescue Research Center and Marine Mammal Center use Dawn. It helps them save wildlife caught in oil spills safely and gently, removing oil from feathers, skin and fur. Apparently rescuers discovered this use for Dawn thirty years ago, and since then have saved 75,000 animals.

Now Dawn is offering a deal to customers who want to get involved and help save wildilfe: when you buy a bottle of Dawn, activate your donataion online, and one dollar is donated to the International Bird Rescue Research Center and Marine Mammal Center.

This is an extremely effective environmental condensation symbol because it is broadcasted all over the country vie television, and people need to wash their dishes with something. Once they get that bottle of soap home it only takes a couple of seconds to get online and activate the donation. Plus, Dawn cheats a little bit by showing cute and fuzzy looking animals on the commercial and also on the bottles of soap. And lets face it, if Dawn can remove oil from fur and feathers, then I imagine it can remove the toughest greases from your dirty dishes.

Should we Conserve?

I strongly believe that wildlife conservation sanctuarys are necessary, but how can the human population and wildlfe live together without interfering with the other? I don't think we can, I think we have to understand that we as humans need to give up some of our modern necessities to let wildlife strive for the future generations.

In New york city there is a river called the Bronx River that used to be full of oysters and other estuary animals. In the 1900's big compaines begain buildling factories and poluting the river. Now The river is being cleaned and communities around the river is being educated about the estuary and why it is important to keep the river mantained and livable for the animals. Factories have now started cooperating with the non-profits organizations that clean the river.

We need to conserve parts of nature in every state. Can you imagine a state with no nature? That was what I saw till high school. I lived right next to a river and never realized that nature was right outside of my window. But to have nature I beleive we need to conserve it before we can preserve it. We need to fix what we have before we can leave it alone, for our future.

Howdy

Hey, my name is Danielle Cote and I'm a sophomore majoring in Wildlife Care and Education. I'm from Massachusetts and I never originally planned leaving state for college. I went to a college fair at a school nearby and didn't like any of the booths I saw until I saw Unity's. It had a picture of a girl holding a bear cub and the guy mentioned snowmobiling so I was instantly captivated by that. Being at this school gives me plenty of opportunities to enjoy some of my favorite things like swimming outdoors in the summer and ice skating in the winter, which is one of the reasons why I love it here so much. So far I'm really enjoying being here at Unity and I hope that continues.

Me

Hello everyone. My name is Alison Zukas and this is my second year at Unity College. I grew up in Middletown, CT and heard about Unity through a Vocational Agriculture program at my school. I never planned on going to college, but didn't know what else to do with my life, so here I am.
I've just about always loved the outdoors and enjoy many hobbies, a few of which include reading, hiking, unicycling, and spending time with my animals back at home. People often mistake me as a strange and uncaring individual, but don't be fooled by my non-expressive exterior. I consider myself to be a stoic and mostly un-opinionated person. Outwardly, I am very shy and untalkative, but I open up occasionally if you try to get to know me.
Ah, but anyway, I am currently majoring in Wildlife and Ecology, which seems to be going well enough so far. My only plan is to just continue "going with the flow" and see where life takes me. I think I look forward to it.

Hello!

My name is Amanda Nelson and I am twenty years old. I am from Windsor, Virginia...and yes I'm from the south...and yes the north and south are very different! I decided to go to Unity College in the lovely state of Maine because I want to help make a difference in the world. I am currently a first semester junior. I plan to major in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology in may 2011. I am currently a Resident Advisor in Cainchette Gold which is an upper-class man residence hall. I also work off campus at Rite-Aid Pharmacy and complete work-study hours with Advisor/professor Aimee Phillippi. I do get really stressed at times but I try and remember that... "If you keep doing what your doing, you'll keep get getting what you've got," and I push on. I have always been inspired by people that care for wildlife and every since I was a little girl I have wanted to have a career in wildlife. I don't know what it is about animals but I have always been more willing to work with animals than people. I'm an extremely open person about my opinion on almost everything...which can be good or bad. Many of my hobbies and interests include playing tennis and Ultimate Frisbee, when its not snowing. I want to learn how to snowboard, fish, hunt, and snowmobile...hopefully before I graduate I can do them all. Also as my way of escape from the world I read, paint paint-by-numbers, and clean. I know that my hobbies are weird things to do to distress but it works for me.

From New England to Michigan and Back Again.

Good evening.

My name is Valerie, but feel free to call me Val if you desire. I am a transfer student from Northwestern Michigan College which is located in the heart of Traverse City, Michigan. It gets cold up there much like here in Unity! However, it should be noted that I only lived in Michigan for fourteen months. Last March I returned to my homestate of Massachusetts, and I currently reside in a town called Chelmsford.

My major is Environmental Writing, and I am considering a minor in Zoology or Wildlife. Incorporating my two passions (writing and animals) as one is what makes up the whole of me, and thus is the primary contributor to why I decided to enroll at Unity College. In addition, I was drawn to the unique styles of teaching which occur at this college and the warm sense of community.

In my free time, I enjoy writing, painting, observing wildlife, taking long walks and socializing. Currently I am making an effort to participate in campus activities to form friendships and to keep me away from technology -- I need a break from it!
